Meet Vincent Obadiah; The Man Who Quit Medical School to Start A Mitumba Business in Kawangware

Vincent was born smart. He had virtually locked the top spot to himself throughout his schooling days. He did so well during the 2018 KCSE exams he managed to squeeze in and end up as one of the few who made the cut to join School of Medicine at the University of Nairobi. But, as soon he started the course, he started realizing something about himself. Part of him was convinced that he was meant to do something else. So, without much further ado, he diverted his attention into starting his own business and focusing his career into the area of self-employment. A coalition government of haters and critics soon formed, calling his decision both preposterous and stupid.

He says he chose not to listen to them and instead gave his mitumba business at Kawangware market his all. In his own words, it was both challenging and satisfying. Every evening, he would receive calls, sometimes from relatives who think he was wasting his talent and future.
“There were many who called me crazy. They said I was throwing away a career and giving poverty tight hugs. That I was inviting problems and leaving the door open for them to enter and go all the way to the kitchen and cook its ill plans. Still, they didn’t convince me. Instead, they only gave me a reason to prove them wrong” he said, a smile plastered across his smooth face. His eyes lightened when he remembered who came to open his eyes and embrace his idea fully.
Along the way, he says he encountered a fellow hustler in Kawangware, who had consulted a native doctor from Vihiga known as Dr Mugwenu.
