How woman conned friend over Sh2.8m posing as lover

Noel Akivembe, 51, and Mildred Lujiri, 49, were childhood best friends, often referring to each other as sisters from different mothers. Their bond was so strong that Akivembe sought Lujiri’s assistance in finding a husband, feeling the need to settle down as she aged and had three children to care for.

Two years ago, The Nairobian published a story about how Akivembe was swindled out of Sh2.8 million by a man named Daniel Ochieng, who she believed was her lover. The article, titled “Woman: I sent my ‘sick lover’ over Sh3 million, now I cannot trace him”, detailed Akivembe’s account of how she had been sending money to Ochieng, who was supposedly recovering in an Indian hospital after a spinal injury.

Akivembe only met Ochieng once, after being introduced by Lujiri, and from then on, they communicated via WhatsApp. Ochieng, posing as a close relative introduced by Lujiri, requested Sh130,000 to facilitate his release from an Indian Immigration Prison due to expired travel documents. Akivembe sent the money to Ochieng through Lujiri, who then allegedly transferred it to Ochieng via PayPal.

However, after the story was published, inconsistencies began to emerge, prompting Akivembe to approach the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for an investigation. The investigation, authorized by then Nakuru County Criminal Investigation Officer (CCIO) Anthony Sunguti in May 2022, revealed that it was Lujiri who had been impersonating Ochieng and had conned her friend.

The investigation found that Lujiri had introduced a fictitious relative to Akivembe, claiming he was interested in her. Lujiri had given Akivembe a number she believed belonged to Ochieng, but it was actually Lujiri’s second number. Lujiri had been communicating with Akivembe via WhatsApp using this new number, pretending to be Ochieng.

According to the DCI, Lujiri received the money but never sent it to anyone. She concocted stories to persuade Akivembe to send her more money. Akivembe stated in her statement that she realized that a picture she believed was of Ochieng, whom she had seen once, was actually of a Kenyan politician.

Lujiri, whom Akivembe then believed was Ochieng, sent her several pictures depicting him in an Indian hospital receiving treatment. Akivembe only saw Ochieng once in May 2021, but she trusted Lujiri implicitly and was convinced by his alleged interest in her.

According to her M-Pesa statement seen by The Nairobian, Akivembe sent Sh20,200 at 4:16pm on August 4, 2021, to cater for his medication. On August 5, 2021, she transferred Sh25,000 at 12:28pm, and on August 6, 2021, she sent Sh5,030 at 7:52am and Sh6,200 at 11:02am. “Since then, I have been sending money whenever he asked me to facilitate his treatment, including Sh140,000 on August 29, 2021,” she wrote in her statement. In August 2021 alone, Akivembe sent Sh1,017,230, as per her M-Pesa statement.

On Monday, May 27, Lujiri was charged with cheating before Nakuru Principal Magistrate Ruth Kefa. The charge sheet read, “On dates between August 5, 2021, and August 17, 2022 at unknown places with others by means of fraud and tricks, you (Lujiri) induced Akivembe to transfer to you through M-Pesa Sh2,869,287,”.

Lujiri denied the charge. She was released on a bond of Sh1 million, with a surety of similar amount. Her case will be mentioned on June 11 for pretrial.
