My best friend Lavender is convinced that her entire family is cursed. Initially, I disagreed with her but after looking at the evidence she provided, she does have a point. I hadn’t taken a hard investigative look at her family until that moment, but all around, literally everyone seems to be under some sort of punishment.

Lavender’s parents divorced three years ago, aren’t on speaking terms. Her older brother Marcus, a teacher by profession, is living life in a loop. He gets his salary on 25th, smiles for two days, and then spends the rest of the month borrowing money from anyone he can find. He has accumulated loans of more than 1.2 Million, on a salary of Kshs. 48,500. Basically, he has to work until 2150 to clear them. His family are suffering. His oldest son has already quit school. Rumors are already circulating that he has been peddling Marijuana since 2022.

Lavender’s sisters are worse. Millicent has a University degree but sells tomatoes at the local marketplace in Uyoma. She has three kids out of wedlock at the tender age of 28. For her, marriage is already out of the equation. Men take bites, leave and refer a friend or two to do the same. As time flies by, she gets more desperate, unsure of what the future holds.

Tatiana is a mental case. She has a temper, blames everyone for her bad fortunes and like Millicent is unmarried but walks around with two little ones on wheelchairs. Both were born with serious congenital defects, unable to walk, talk in full sentences or even help her hustle. She is a bitter woman, who seems to believe that the world has tormented her, continues to show no mercy.

Family wrangles have served to pull them apart. No one dares talk to Marcus. He borrows money like no one, cries on the phone like a baby just to get you to feel horrible for not helping. His tactics have alienated him from everyone, who consider him a lost cause.

Their parents don’t help either. All they do is pull them apart, in a bid to have partners to hate on the other parent. The three sisters don’t get along either. Tatiana’s temper always comes in play, whenever Lavender tries to act as the peacemaker. She hangs up, quickly, but only after calling everyone a goat.

Everyone in her family is in the midst of a sandstorm, unable to tell if an oasis lies ahead or a deep cliff. Nothing they’ve done works. They attended an aunt’s funeral last year, and no one had anything to offer, other than condolences and fake tears. Problems were winning, and every possible solution out has so far proved yet another trick conjured by the devil to hurt them even more. Businesses have failed spectacularly. Education has proved useless. Their piece of land is now the graveyard in Uyoma, as everything they have planted there dries up.

Turns out, Lavender was right all along. Her family was harboring a dangerous curse, bad omens cast onto them by Rafael Otieno, the man who was supposed to marry their mother. She had been betrothed to him, only for their father to Snatch her away from his view. Out of anger, he cursed them and performed a dangerous black magic spell on her to never succeed. All this she found out when she visited Dr. Mugwenu in Vihiga.
