“My Wife’s Dementia Almost Killed Our Marriage. I Come Home From Work To Find That She Has Forgotten Who Iam, Asks “Who Are You And What Are You Doing In This House??” Nairobi Man Painfully Narrates
Has anyone ever forgotten you?? A former classmate, a colleague or a friend who completely forgot you, your name, everything. Sometimes we run into people we once knew and we greet them, only for him to turn around and ask you “do I know you??”. It hurts, because some of us are so good with faces, we still remember every member of Form Four West back in 2009!! For Christian Opondo though, his own wife often forgets him, treats him like a stranger in his own house. Sheryl Opondo was diagnosed with Dementia, a disease where the patient often forgets things, people and even places. Initially, it was sporadic, occurring in bits. Back then, she’d forget where she placed her phone, forget memories in the past, events that she personally attended but comes out blank when asked about them. “It hurts every time I have to explain to her that am her husband, been married to her for nine years. Every time she asks me “who are you??”, my heart stops, because I don’t know if this is the last time and if ever she will remember me. I’ve tried all kinds of hospitals for modern treatment, but so far, I’ve spent money without seeing any progress” Christian says.
Christian adds that it becomes even more embarrassing in public, recounts a moment in a Supermarket when they both got to the counter and when he was about to pay, Sheryl went blank and demanded that he leaves her alone, that she didn’t know her and even asked the security to take him away from her. It took him a lot of convincing to avoid the security guys calling the police, thinking he kidnapped her. Since then, he says, he carries with him a photo of their wedding in his wallet and inscribed “Mr. and Mrs. Opondo beneath both their wedding rings.
Christian admits that watching his lovely wife disappear slowly into an unknown world, where everyone can be dismissed as “non-persona, non-grata” stressed him beyond limits. His heart sunk every time she insulted him, saying she won’t share a bed with him because she didn’t know who he was.
