Everything new requires an orientation period. When I first joined Campus at the University of Nairobi, the people, environment and huge lecture halls constantly served a reminder; this is not high school. Adapt or become obsolete. The ” Fresh Years Party” was fun. I was allocated a “prefab” , temporary constructions designed to accommodate many at low costs. There were four of us. Unfortunately, being new sometimes puts a target on your back. Less than a month into the semester, the first incident occurred. Prefab 4 was hit and students lost property; laptops, phones, cash and other valuables.

The thieves had designed a well thought formula. They come at night, during which most of us are fast asleep. They gas the prefab, ensuring nobody wakes up. Then they use a master key to open each, take what can be taken without pressure or resistance and leave. You wake up only to find your things gone yet the door is still locked. Prefab ten was next. Same formula, same results.

Things cooled down for a few weeks but then they eventually came back. Those of us in prefab 2 got the worst of it. They stole everything, literally. Initially, they would leave clothes behind but not this time. My favorite jeans was gone, laptop, phone and even text books!!
Enough is enough. We were hurdled at a corner shivering (duvets had been taken too) when Wanyonyi had a suggestion. Back in Western, people from all over used to show up at the gate of an herbalist called Dr mugwenu for assistance. Let’s call him too. He called an uncle of his who forwarded him his number.
