How Nairobi gangs are using juju to escape police

The thugs are said to have resorted to juju following a crackdown by special police units.

The police operation which started more than a year ago has seen dangerous robbers traced, eliminated and photos of their bodies splashed on social media.

Undercover cops tasked with eliminating criminals among them outlawed Gaza gang that operates in slums said more criminals are turning to juju to carry out their missions.

“There are many cases of thugs seeking ‘treatment’ from witchdoctors. A day hardly passes without us bumping into a criminal covered with witchcraft paraphernalia. Some of them carry crocodile teeth and apply strange ointment on their bodies” an undercover police officer operating along Juja Road said.

His colleague who operates along Thika Road said they have recovered a particular type of ring worn around the waist by thugs they have gunned down.

Some of the treated stuff found on fallen thugs include fly whisks, bones, oils, rings, black powders and treated water.

“It is true, but polisi wote wametakaswa kwa jina takatifu la Yesu Kristo (all police officers are protected by the name of Jesus Christ),” said a popular cop who is the administrator of a famous Facebook group.

The group often warns would-be criminals and posts pictures of gunned down thugs.

To ascertain the claims, this journalist, while posing as a thug looking for mystic powers, visited a Ngara-based witchdoctor.

“You only need to pay Sh5,000. I can do a good job. In fact I’ve assisted many of your ‘friends’, and they have succeeded. My treatment will protect you from police and help you evade bullets,” he told this journalist.

When asked what is needed for the treatment the Tanzania-born mganga explained: “Just come with your tools, including knives and guns. I will treat them and give you something for protection.”

He added that, “I’ve been told by ‘ancestors’ you are on the way, you can as well send the money so that I can start preparing the medicine.”
