“I’ve Lost 17 Jobs in One Year, Am a Total Failure” Man Laments Immense Bad Luck in Kariokoo, Unable to Explain How Job after Job Slip Away
My name is Martin Njoroge, a resident of Kariokoo, Nairobi for more than five years. The truth is, am beginning to question the reason for my existence. I feel cursed, on purpose. One of his dogs ran outside when I was opening the gate to a friend of his. I searched for it in the cold of the night for three straight hours. When I returned it, my boss was at the gate, furious. I was gone the next morning.
So many times I have been on the other side of luck, unable to keep a steady income. I cried so hard when my girlfriend dumped me because I could not give her anything on her birthday. I was broke, because the previous job I had, as a caretaker lasted less than a month, so the owner paid a portion of my salary, leaving me with the dilemma of buying her a gift or paying rent. I chose rent. She chose to leave. I cried. So many other jobs ended in similar inexplicable circumstances, leaving me with no money, no future or hope. I was on the brink, contemplating suicide when Thomas visited me at my single room without electricity in Kariokoo, looking for a pen to write down my farewell to family and friends. He had good news. I was in a bad mood.
