Perseverance, Endurance, Patience and Understanding. They are all terms used sparingly in marriage, to make it last longer, to hold it tight with a masking tape when really, the love is dead, the emotions gone and the relationship torn to pieces. Mildred Onyango, 36, is too familiar with those terms, as her mother kept pushing her to hold on. Her marriage to Raymond Odillo is officially a prison sentence. She hasn’t smiled genuinely for months, hiding pain and wishing for the ground to open up and swallow her whole.
Raymond rarely comes home. For months, Mildred has had to tell her neighbors that her husband is working in Maasai Mara, when really, she has no idea where he is. He shows up unannounced, vanishes at night without saying a word. Mildred hasn’t received a coin from him since 2018. All the bills are hers. Their three children won’t stop asking her questions as to when their dad will be home. They look at other families, fail to understand why their father is ever absent for their prize giving days, wanting to make him proud for emerging top of their class.
“Nimezoea haya maisha ya upweke. Kusema tu ukweli wa Mungu, nateseka. Sina amani. Hii ndoa haijanisaidia venye nilitarajia. Huyu gaidi hana roho ya binadamu. Hajali, hataki kuambiwa na hajukumiki. Nafanya kila kitu mwenyewe. Heri nyinyi mlio single” she confessed to her best friend Celestine. She could easily tell that Mildred was holding back tears, struggling to get her act together and swallowing hard.
Mildred no longer remembers their wedding, as the happy moments have now been replaced by violence, bruises and a lack of connection, communication or consideration. Her parents keep on preaching peace, saying that eventually, Raymond will return home, that the challenges are part of marriage. She got fed up with their consoling words and branched out to seek for other alternatives.
One of those was a trip to an aunt with her kids for the April holiday. Her aunt had mentioned that she knew of a man who could help her end her suffering. She recommended, upon her arrival, that she visits a traditional herbalist called Dr. Mugwenu. She did so, quickly. She arrived in Vihiga exhausted but excited at the prospect of ending her years of sleepless nights, the pressure and stress.
Using his powerful Love and Binding spells, Dr. Mugwenu quickly dissected the problem and solved it. Mildred was very surprised when Raymond called while she was still at Dr. Mugwenu’s headquarters, asking her for forgiveness. Raymond personally came for her, then his family. The Spells did the trick. From that day onwards, her marriage to Raymond stabilized. He became responsible. Spent time with the kids. Handled all the bills and looked for excuses to bond with them. Thanks to Dr. Mugwenu, she woke up from her nightmare and started living.
