Facts about Indians: they are many and they are usually business minded. My boss, Anwar Khan Pandresh Janoowalla fit the profile. He lived in Parklands but had a business in the city. I was hired to make deliveries a few years ago but has since earned his trust and graduated to doing all kinds of errands for him. Once you prove loyal and trustworthy, you are in!! They are notorious for hoarding cash too. It wasn’t uncommon to be summoned to deliver cash to their suppliers every now and then.
One day I was given a package as usual to be delivered to Mishra and sons. Turns out someone had information about such a trip. Me and the driver were ambushed along the way!! I thought for a while and came up with a plan. First, as cash strapped as I was, I needed to buy time. The empty tires came in handy. A puncture takes a while to mend. As the driver was sorting the tire situation I would use that time to seek a solution as quickly as we can. I called Anwar first, then Mishra and finally my brother. Thank God he was a quick thinker. He sent me the number 0740637248 and insisted I call immediately. I did. I explained what happened. The guy on the other end, whom I learnt later is called Dr mugwenu told me that in a few minutes I will have my package back.
How shocked I was when the very car they took off with appeared on the other side approaching me. Turns out they had circled back, not aware that instead of going to their destination they were actually headed towards me. They stopped, handed over the package and called me “sir”, I guess referring to whomever they were to hand over the package to. For the remainder of the day they kept circling through the same route over and over again. Did I care?? Of course not. I was on my way to Mishra to deliver the package and be back in Parklands on time without raising any suspicion!!
