A jobless Kenyan discloses her struggle in job search despite having immense qualifications
Brenda had been jobless for a half decade now. Reality dawned on her immediately she stepped into overcrowded unemployment line that winds its way deep in the horizon. She graduated from Moi University with a Bachelor Degree in Tourism in 2008. Brenda who had turned 30 years said she had sent more than 200 CV to different employers seeking for a job opportunity but none turned to be positive. She had used to sit outside her home in Kapseret Eldoret perusing through her CV and other academic credentials enveloped by a sense of helplessness.
“I cannot say I have not tried because I have been applying for jobs left, right centre,” says Brenda. “I also took the initiative of to drop my resume in several offices, meet directors and company CEOs. But then, I was never employed,” she says. She had only worked once after she graduated on six year contract with a hotel in Eldoret but the contract was terminated after six months. She hoped it was to be renewed but things turned to be difficult. Her search for job had not yielded any fruit. After attending several interviews, including some which she says seemed promising, she has never landed either a full time employment or even a regret letter.
“I wondered how I never received any single regret letter or employment letter despite the many jobs applications I have been sending year in, year out,” she says. This job such and heartache has taken a toll on her health. She suffered from stress and other related risks due to the fact that she has no job despite having qualifications of getting one. “There is a point I felt helpless. I even lost weight within a short span and after visiting a doctor, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and advised to reduce stress,” she said.
Despite all this, her dreams of pursing education had not ended as she applied for a master’s degree. Within no time she came through a traditional doctor by the name Dr Mugwenu.
