Albert Otieno has become a house hold name in Kibera, as many residents know him from his involvement in Sponsorship programs in the area. He bought equipment for boxing, gym and fitness and installed them at the Social Hall for everyone to benefit only a few months ago.
He has been at the forefront of youth empowerment projects and is a known confidant of the current governor of Nairobi. What most people don’t know, is that Albert comes from a long line of family disappointments, originating with his great grandfather Norman Omondi Otieno.
For a long time, they were known as the “cursed family”, mostly because no one from their bloodline had amounted to anything. His great grandfather died of hunger, after walking for miles in search of a job and failing. His return journey ended prematurely when he dropped dead on the roadside, leaving behind a family of 19 children cast into abject poverty. Even his father didn’t achieve anything worth of mention at his burial in Ugunja, after enduring years of working for a Hindu businessman in the CBD.
He too died a poor man. Albert inherited nothing other than his genes and a pair of jeans.
As a teenager, Albert would look around and see nothing but suffering. All of his uncles were poor, some surviving on hand-outs and odd jobs in the City and across Kitengela. No one, ever, had driven a car before him. No one had even gone to University. All were primary school leavers with 150 marks and below. The genius among them, an uncle named Opindi, scored an E+ during his KCSE exams. What that meant was, when Albert finally found his breakthrough, he instantly became a celebrity at home.
It took a while though for his potential to be unlocked as he too had to struggle. He went from a Shoe Cobbler to a multimillionaire in less than two years, thanks in part due to a rich guy, a total stranger who gave him the contact of a traditional herbalist called Dr. Mugwenu.
