I can see, said the blind man. I don’t believe you, the chronic doubter insisted. This is a true story that I personally witnessed in Kilifi when I was posted there as a teacher at Makongeni High school. My name is Thomas Musembi, and I witnessed one of the most bizarre incidents in my life, when a fellow teacher named Katana Mwangome saw a sea creature and duly invited us to see with our own eyes after we refuted his claim that he had come face to face with a jini from the sea. First, the description. Female, medium height, long black hair that dropped below her shoulders, very gorgeous and always covered herself from the waist down. Katana went to the ocean to swim and unfortunately dropped his keys. When he went back to search for them at night, he saw a figure approaching him, with an elegant walk and small sturdy steps.
He didn’t bother to walk away, as it is uncommon for a man to shy away from a woman, especially when it is dark and full in the knowledge that he was still very single. As it turned out, he was about to see not just a beautiful creature but also become the center of a mystery. What transpired that day left him beyond words and wondering if he had lost his mind and was hallucinating. But, he wasn’t. She greeted him, introduced herself as Timaya and assured him that she wasn’t going to harm him in any way. She was impressed by his guts and wanted to spend more time getting to know each other. She followed him to his place, and somehow managed to make herself only visible to him. For the next three weeks, she would visit him, telling her stories about her life deep in the ocean, how she hunts for food, how they value mermaid flesh and the regions across the Indian ocean most likely inhabited by members of her species. He was shocked!!
Eventually, he opened up to us and we peeked through his window one day to witness the wonder of wonders happening right before our eyes!! Unfortunately, her visits started to become more frequent. She wanted more from him. When she mentioned introducing him to his family, Katana freaked out. A life with a semi-human being?? Absolutely not. So he started giving excuses for his absence. Until she showed up at school, at the back of his class. Katana took off and went to the staff room, sweating. He quickly learnt he can’t avoid her. She could appear anywhere, and only managed to remain visible to him alone. Eventually, he grew tired of hiding. I informed him of a native doctor from Vihiga who could help him. Dr. Mugwenu was actually the one who helped me get the high school posting in the first place. I had spent years seeking employment but failed miserably.
