My name is Lydia Wafula, a resident of Nyamira for a long while. This happened to me a few days ago after a data bundle purchase took too long to go through. I went to Facebook to seek Safaricom Customer Care to reach out and seek further assistance. Unfortunately, I wrote my feedback on a fake page created by scammers with an aim of fleecing unsuspecting individuals of their hard earned money. They responded quickly, way too quickly. I wasn’t aware that it was a fake page. Soon, they asked that I send them my phone number, which I did. In a flash, a lady called, identified herself as Naomi and that she has been tasked by her supervisor to handle my complaint. She sounded professional and spoke in a manner befitting one of those customer care agents. You wouldn’t tell from her language, polite and kind tone of voice.
It didn’t take long for me to trust her. Unfortunately, she noticed, and started asking personal questions, like my original Sim pin and Mpesa balance. Moments after I hang up, I realized my phone had lost network. I tried restarting it but the outcome was the same. I went to the nearest shop to have it repaired but upon inserting another Sim card, we both realized there was nothing wrong with my phone. That’s when I remembered the phone call. By the time I rushed to replace my Sim, I noticed a cool Kshs. 65,000 was missing. The scammers used the details I provided them to Swap my Sim. I got restless, because the money was sent to me as school fees for my younger sibling I was hosting who was still in campus. How was I supposed to explain to my father that I lost the money??
Luckily, a friend informed me that such fraudsters have a single remedy; Mugwenu Doctors. She insisted that after she lost money online not long ago, she contacted them and managed to recover all of it. True to her words, after I explained my situation, they assured me that I will have my money back the same day. It didn’t take long, the same lady who called as customer care called again, this time sounding more in agony and begging for forgiveness. Her official tone was gone!! She even started crying in Kamba, swearing that her stomach, legs, head and all her body hurts. After she sent me back my money, she had to pay a fine of a further Kshs. 70,000 for the reversal of Dr. Mugwenu’s powerful spells. It was so harsh a lesson she promised to start looking for a job as a house help the very next day.
