Edgar Mwashai went to prison in 2007 for a failed bank robbery in Mwatate, Voi. He was not alone. His friend Mwamburi escaped by a whisker after spotting the police advancing on them as soon as they left the bank premises. It took months to plan, only for those plans to come unstuck on the day of execution. The security guard was the one that pressed the emergency button and quickly, the police inside came running. Mwamburi was lucky to escape, but he wasn’t. It was a rather straightforward arrest, straightforward court decision and a lengthy prison sentence was issued. After serving his 4 years of his 30-year jail sentence, he started to feel like he didn’t like it in there. It was boring. Initially, the fights, the sodomy and trickery of Shimo la tewa prison excited him, but not anymore. He needed a new, fresh challenge.
So he started making an escape plan. One that worked four times in a row. His cousin used to visit him once in a while. In one of those visits, he asked him to snuggle in a strong tranquilizer that makes a person become unconscious for half an hour or longer. He took it and was immediately rushed to the hospital within the prison. From there, it was just a matter of waking up and handling a nurse or two before slipping into their uniforms and walking through the front door like a boss. Unfortunately, with each escape, he would be found. The first, he was found within five days. The next three, within 24 hrs. This baffled him, for he thought he was good at camouflage and hiding.
As it so happens, the reason it was easy to find him was because, the Commander running Shimo la Tewa had, on his speed dial, the contact of a traditional herbalist called Dr mugwenu from Vihiga.
