“Nimefika mwisho mum, acha Tu niende. It’s been a pleasure knowing you!! Suicidal son tells his mother after battling depression for years in Kakamega.

My name is Bramwel Khaemba from Kakamega. When they say life is a series of ups and downs, ask how long the downs are going to be for. I spent years building a career, growing both physically and emotionally. My mother was so proud. An engineer from JKUAT earning six digit salaries. A car, wife (no children yet) and a reasonable plan for the future. The future was indeed bright. Then it all came tumbling down. I fell ill out of the blue, before I could grasp what was happening, my future had turned black. I was diagnosed with kidney failure. The only solution was weekly dialysis, which was ridiculously expensive.

Within a few months, my savings were gone. My car and several valuable items were put on sale to cater for my frequent visits to the hospital. Soon, I couldn’t work. Because my kidneys were technically dead, my bladder too was affected. An incision was made so that I didn’t have to store urine there. I had an external bag on my waist just for urine, wherever I go it goes too. As my physical health deteriorated, so did my mental health. My wife left me for another man that year and worsened an already dying soul. Depression set in, tormenting me from within. Throughout, the only person who stuck around was my mother. Poor woman, I’m going to kill her too if I die.

I had lost hope. No money, no wife, no kidneys or bladder, nothing. She had suggested to give me one or both her kidneys but she was old. That would technically be substituting one life for another. The doctors wouldn’t hear any of it. It was against the Hippocratic oath they said.
She came back in the evening one day and found me crawling on the ground, my urine bag detached. I was trying to reach a knife on the table. The aim was to puncture an artery on my arm and bleed out. The end.
I begged her to let me finish my suicide mission. Instead, she smiled and pronounced that soon, my problems will be over. She has found a solution. Have I infected her with delusion too?? I wondered. She wasn’t kidding. She mentioned Dr mugwenu, an herbalist recommended to her by a friend. She called him. As I watched her face brighten, I knew this is it. He handled everything, the depression, kidney issue and bladder.
Am currently building myself up, block by block. Thanks Dr mugwenu, you came just at the most opportune moment.
