Then he received a phone call from the deputy head teacher that Githongo has not been seen in school for three days. He received another phone call the same day from an unknown number telling him that Githongo is safe, for now, but he has to pay a ransom to get him back in one piece. He had been kidnapped!!!
The school was quickly informed, but the ransom demanded, 2M, was more than what could be collected. He pleaded for more time to get the money but they wouldn’t listen nor reveal their identities. He reported to the police, who asked for all available details about the conversation he had with them. Four days later and nothing new to report. Harambees that had been done the previous day yielded a mere 400,000. When he asked if the police had located them, he was informed that an investigation was still underway. Nothing new to report either.
The kidnappers called once more. He informed them of how much he had collected. They gave him one more day, after which they said it would be best to purchase a body bag and make burial arrangements. He freaked out at the thought.
His sister called that afternoon and advised him to call an herbalist called Dr mugwenu and ask for his help in locating their brother. He called immediately. In less than 20 minutes, the herbalist had successfully located him. He was being held in a house in Mariakani, Mombasa. The police went there, found him with two men who were guarding him. He was tied to a pole, bruises visible on his handsome face. They were quickly arrested. It later emerged, after questioning that the person behind everything was actually Macharia’s uncle, who had previously wanted to take forcefully a piece of land in Muranga that belonged to their father. He too was arrested.
