The only constant thing in life is Change. I’m Linda, working in an Mpesa shop in Nairobi. In this line of business, you have to be on the lookout. Despite being cautious, I still found myself on the wrong side of conmen. Two men came dressed nicely claiming to work with Safaricom. They had my details, carried IDs with name and photos. They were doing regular updates on the MPESA lines, make them more secure. I gave them my katululu to make the necessary changes, but somehow managed to clear my float of more than 150,000. This despite not asking for any of my pins.
They took off after they noticed I was asking them questions to ascertain their identities. I contacted safaricom customer care only to be informed that a series of such incidents have been reported and that I should be more careful. What to do? What do I tell the owner when she does show up demanding answers? That am too gullible and naïve to work for her? I closed temporarily, opted to consult fellow Mpesa agents for clues. Eventually a kamba lady called Katungi suggested I contact a herbalist she once consulted. I was skeptical but she showed me a video she recorded of her perpetrators running mad screaming for forgiveness.
